Story Time

When the Army Came to Little Rock

Little Rock's military presence began in the 1840s with the Little Rock Arsenal, a frontier outpost. Over the course of the 20th century, the area transformed into a major training center: Fort Roots, Camp Pike, and then Camp Robinson brought hundreds of thousands of soldiers across Arkansas during both world wars. Camp Robinson alone grew so much during World War II that it effectively became the second-largest "city" in Arkansas, housing recruits, medics, and even German and Italian prisoners of war working on local farms. These camps profoundly changed Little Rock's economy and identity, intertwining military life with everyday American life.

But the most enduring chapter in the Army's history in Little Rock came in 1957. When the state government attempted to block the integration of Central High School, President Eisenhower dispatched the 101st Airborne Division to enforce federal law and protect the nine black students entering the school. The images of paratroopers with fixed bayonets in the building's hallways shocked the world and forced the nation to confront the true meaning of equality. After the Screaming Eagles' departure, the now federalized Arkansas National Guard continued the mission for the remainder of the school year.
