Story Time

Wilshire Tower and the Birth of the Miracle Mile

Completed between 1928 and 1929 at 5514 Wilshire Boulevard, the Wilshire Tower arose precisely at the moment Los Angeles was reinventing the way a city was conceived. Developer A.W. Ross envisioned Wilshire as a boulevard designed for the automobile, and architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood created the perfect symbol: the first Art Deco tower on the Miracle Mile. Its zigzagging vertical form served as a veritable billboard for speeding motorists, while its Streamline Moderne base attracted pedestrians. Inside, luxury reigned supreme, with an ornate lobby adorned with 14-karat gold leaf ceilings.

The tower marked the westward shift of the city's commercial center, away from downtown. The ground floors housed high-end menswear stores, while the upper floors were occupied by doctors, architects, and other professionals. Often mistaken for a telephone exchange, the Wilshire Tower actually represents the moment the city began to expand, redefining daily life on the Westside. Its enormous neon signs, visible from blocks away, became icons of the avenue and survive today as the last historic signs on the Miracle Mile. Nearly a century later, the building continues to thrive thanks to its conversion into residential housing.
