Story Time

Auburn in the ’80s: Bo, Barkley & Big Changes 🐅🔥

In the ’80s, Auburn University was no longer just a Southern school, but a campus in transformation. New colleges, labs and libraries were springing up, making Auburn a growing research hub, while students wrestled with what tradition meant in a rapidly changing South.

One of the most controversial moments was the Old South Parade, a homecoming ritual in which fraternity members wore Confederate uniforms and paraded through town in horse-drawn carriages. To some it was just folklore; to others, a painful reminder of slavery and segregation. By the mid-’80s the protests against the parade grew louder and louder: in 1986 demonstrators with signs called it offensive and outdated and, in 1990, the tradition was ended for good, marking a cultural turning point on campus.

Meanwhile, sports were enjoying golden years. Bo Jackson’s touchdown in the 1982 Iron Bowl snapped Alabama’s nine-game winning streak and fired everyone up. With the 1985 Heisman Trophy and SEC titles in ’83 and from ’87 to ’89, coach Pat Dye’s Tigers dominated the decade. On the hardwood, Charles Barkley carried Auburn to the NCAA tournament before becoming an NBA superstar.
