STORY TIME

By the 1970s, the American Legion Boys State had become a veritable rite of passage for tens of thousands of high school students across the United States. Every summer, over 25,000 boys, selected for their leadership and character, gathered in 49 states to build a government from scratch.

In just one week, they formed cities, elected mayors, passed laws, held trials, and managed legislatures: a true practical simulation of democracy. But beyond the simulated government, Boys State also addressed the issues of the moment: Vietnam, Watergate, civil rights, and the 26th Amendment, giving the experience a real urgency.

1976 marked a milestone: a historic co-ed edition of Boys & Girls Nation was held in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the United States Bicentennial. 297 delegates had the opportunity to meet President Ford and witness moments of bipartisan compromise.

By the end of the decade, Boys State had become a veritable training ground for civic ambition, counting among its alumni Neil Armstrong, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jordan, and countless future leaders in every field.
