Played on New Year's Eve at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, the game began a tradition that would endure in college bowl history.
A curious and memorable anecdote accompanied Cal's invitation to the Alamo Bowl: the entire Golden Bears team discovered their destiny in an unusual setting, during a wedding, adding a unique and unforgettable touch to the team's journey.
California arrived as a favorite and surpassed all expectations with a resounding 37–3 victory over Iowa. This overwhelming victory capped the Golden Bears' season, securing them an indelible place in Alamo Bowl history.
