Story Time

The Man Born for NASCAR

Dale Earnhardt grew up in Kannapolis, North Carolina, the son of short track driver Ralph Earnhardt, learning the trade in garages, small local ovals and under his family's strict expectations. By the time he reached NASCAR's top series in the mid-'70s, he had already developed the image that would follow him for his entire career: tough, blunt, fearless and almost impossible to move once he'd decided a race was his.

His rise wasn't immediate, but once it started it changed NASCAR forever. After winning Rookie of the Year in 1979, Earnhardt became champion in 1980, the first driver to win the title the season after earning top rookie honors. His return to Richard Childress Racing, behind the wheel of the famous black number 3 Chevrolet, turned him into one of the sport's most iconic figures. Through the '80s and early '90s he built his reputation on a hard-nosed driving style, an extraordinary ability to handle the decisive moments of a race and a presence on the track that put pressure on opponents even before he passed them. That's where the nickname "The Intimidator" came from: not just for his aggression, but for his ability to dominate a race psychologically as well.

Earnhardt's seven titles tell the story of a driver who could evolve without ever losing his character. He dominated the 1987 championship with 11 wins, returned to the top in 1990 and 1991, then won the title again in 1993 and 1994, tying Richard Petty's all-time record of seven NASCAR championships. Even in 1996, after the terrible crash at Talladega that left him seriously injured, he made it back on track, winning the pole at Watkins Glen and finishing the race sixth despite the pain. That season didn't bring him another title, but it proved once again why he was so deeply respected by the fans.
