Story Time

The USS Enterprise (CVN-65) was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, but some of the most important chapters in its history took place far from the Pacific. During the Cold War and beyond, the Enterprise made numerous deployments with the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, transforming the celebrated Med Cruise from a mere operational mission into a demonstration of American military power, diplomacy, and global presence.

Its first Mediterranean cruise took place in 1962, less than a year after it entered service. For allies and rivals alike, the Enterprise seemed to arrive from the future: a massive nuclear-powered warship capable of embarking the most modern generation of naval aircraft. Port calls in places like Naples became true diplomatic events, while its presence signaled the United States' entry into the nuclear era of naval warfare. Two years later, the Enterprise again helped make history with Operation Sea Orbit, joining the USS Long Beach and the USS Bainbridge in the world's first all-nuclear task force for a global circumnavigation without the need for refueling.

The Mediterranean remained strategically vital throughout Enterprise’s career. During the 1986 Libyan crisis, she became the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to transit the Suez Canal, rapidly moving from the Indian Ocean to reinforce American forces in the region. In the 1990s, her Mediterranean assignments blossomed into multi-theater operations that connected NATO missions in the Balkans, security operations in the Adriatic, and combat operations against Iraq during Operation Desert Fox. That sea that once represented one of the Cold War’s primary front lines had by then become a strategic bridge between Europe and the Middle East.
