Story Time

Lake View School: Madeline Island's One-Classroom

In the heart of Madeline Island, Wisconsin, Lake View School opened in 1905 as a simple log building serving the children of farmers, lumberjacks, and fishermen. It was a classic one-room rural school, where a single teacher taught all subjects from first to eighth grade, with older students often helping the younger ones.

For the small community near Big Bay Road, Lake View was much more than a school. It was a landmark in a sparsely populated district, at a time when the municipality of La Pointe still needed several isolated schools because of poor roads and long distances. Enrollment was minimal, often under 15 students, but stable enough to keep the school open for 33 years. By the late 1930s, however, demographic changes and new school consolidation policies put an end to its operation. Lake View closed in 1938, and the students were transferred to a larger school in La Pointe; the old log building then served as a private residence for years.

But the story didn't end there. In the early 1990s, the Madeline Island Historical Preservation Association dismantled the old schoolhouse, log by log, and moved it to their Heritage Center in La Pointe, restoring it as a period classroom, complete with a stove, desks, books, and a woodshed in the back. Today, visitors can enter Lake View School and relive a typical school day in the early 1900s.
