Story Time

Auburn in the '80s: Bo, Barkley & Big Changes 🐅🔥

By the 1980s, Auburn University was no longer just a Southern university, but a campus in transformation. New colleges, laboratories, and libraries were springing up, making Auburn a growing research hub, while students grappled with the meaning of tradition in a rapidly changing South.

One of the most controversial moments was the Old South Parade, a homecoming ritual in which fraternity members donned Confederate uniforms and paraded through the city in horse-drawn carriages. To some, it was mere folklore; to others, a painful reminder of slavery and segregation. In the mid-1980s, protests against the parade grew increasingly louder: in 1986, protesters holding signs called it offensive and outdated, and in 1990, the tradition was definitively discontinued, marking a cultural turning point on campus.

Meanwhile, sports were experiencing golden years. Bo Jackson's touchdown in the 1982 Iron Bowl snapped Alabama's nine-game winning streak and ignited passions. With the 1985 Heisman Trophy and SEC titles in '83 and '87-'89, coach Pat Dye's Tigers dominated the decade. On the court, Charles Barkley led Auburn to the NCAA tournament before becoming an NBA superstar.
