Story Time

The Parmalat Revolution That Rebuilt a Giant

In the 1990s, Palmeiras went from years of frustration to becoming Brazil's most dominant team thanks to a financial boost: Parmalat's investment. With stars like Roberto Carlos, Edmundo, Zinho, and, later, Rivaldo, the club adopted a fast-paced, attacking system that immediately transformed its identity. The results were spectacular. In 1993, Palmeiras ended a 17-year drought by crushing Corinthians 4–0 in a legendary Paulista final, won the Rio–São Paulo title a few weeks later, and conquered the Brasileirão by defeating Vitória in front of nearly 90,000 fans at the Morumbi. The following season followed the same pattern: an undefeated Paulista, the explosive arrival of Rivaldo, and another league title, once again sealed against bitter rivals Corinthians.

At the heart of this super-team was Palmeiras' number 10, Zinho, a calm and intelligent playmaker whose technique held the entire midfield together. While Edmundo and Rivaldo produced attacking magic, Zinho dictated the pace and added crucial goals in both title-winning seasons.
