Story Time

Exit 81A, a Local Legend: The Story of Bubba's Boot Outlet

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Murfreesboro saw the birth of a new landmark at the intersection of I-24 and Highway 231: Bubba's Boot Outlet. Founded by local entrepreneur Arthur Curtis “T-Model” Hutson Sr. and named after his son, “Bubba,” the store promised “Complete Western Wear & Accessories,” and it lived up to its promise just as the urban cowboy trend exploded. Located next to the highway, across the street from Howard Johnson's, Bubba's attracted locals and travelers, transforming a family business into Rutherford County's premier western store.

During the 1980s, Bubba's thrived thanks to its outlet prices and a wide selection of well-known brands: Tony Lama, Justin, Dan Post, Nocona, and Durango, as well as Wrangler denim, Panhandle Slim shirts, Resistol and Bailey hats, and shiny Crumrine and Montana Silversmith buckles. As the Hutson family opened new stores—Bubba's Market next door and Bubba's Wine & Liquors downtown—the store also became a gathering place, with parking lot sales, rodeo promotions, and ads in student newspapers.

In the 1990s, with the arrival of department stores and the waning of the Western clothing boom, Bubba's lost commercial ground, but it had already left an indelible mark on the community's memory.
