STORY TIME
The 1987–88 Washington Redskins, led by head coach Joe Gibbs, overcame a turbulent and strike-shortened NFL season to capture their second Super Bowl title. The season was marred by the cancellation of Week 3 and the use of substitute players between Weeks 4 and 6, during which time the Redskins were the only team without union members breaking the strike. Despite the challenges, the team excelled, finishing 11–4 and capturing the NFC East title.

Led by quarterback Doug Williams, who made history as the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl, the Redskins dominated the Denver Broncos 42–10 in Super Bowl XXII.

During the NFC Championship game against Minnesota, Joe Gibbs earned his tenth playoff win, surpassing Vince Lombardi's nine. The contributions of substitute players in strike games proved crucial to the team's success, so much so that they were rewarded with postseason bonuses and, years later, even Super Bowl rings in recognition of their roles.

That season remains a milestone in NFL history, both for its triumph over adversity and for its cultural significance, particularly thanks to the groundbreaking achievements of Doug Williams.

Jack Davis: A Prolific Illustrator of Comics, Advertising, and Entertainment

Jack Davis was a versatile illustrator whose career spanned comics, advertising, and popular culture. After creating a training manual for Coca-Cola in 1949, he studied at the Art Students League of New York and began working as an inker on the comic strip The Saint. His humor strip "Beauregard" enjoyed brief syndication before finding sustained success at EC Comics in 1950.

Davis contributed to iconic titles such as Tales from the Crypt and The Haunt of Fear, where his distinctive style elevated the stories' disturbing tone. He also illustrated Mad Magazine, decisively contributing to the magazine's early success with his fiery style and exaggerated humor. He returned in 1965, collaborating with Mad for over three decades.

In addition to comics, Davis created memorable advertising characters, including a cartoon bee for New York City's Bee-Line buses, and produced movie posters, album covers, and magazine illustrations, demonstrating his extraordinary versatility in a variety of media.

Jack Davis's work became synonymous with Americana, from sports-themed illustrations in Mad to movie posters like The Bad News Bears and It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. His talents also extended to album covers for Johnny Cash and The Guess Who, as well as TV Guide covers featuring icons like Bob Hope.

In the later years of his career, Davis created mascots and designs for sports teams, colleges, and local institutions, leaving a legacy that celebrated humor, creativity, and the art of visual storytelling.
