Story Time

Superman: You'll believe a man can fly ✨🦸‍♂️

The story of Superman: The Movie begins in the mid-1970s, when producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind obtained the rights from DC and Warner Bros. and embarked on the ambitious project of filming Superman I and II back-to-back. They entrusted the screenplay to Mario Puzo, the writer of The Godfather, who penned a monumental script. Their vision was summed up in one word: "verisimilitude."

The casting was also a high-profile gamble. Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman were hired for record-breaking pay, but the real revelation was Christopher Reeve, a young, unknown 23-year-old whose combination of sincerity and quiet strength made him the definitive Clark Kent. Filmed at Pinewood Studios and on location in New York, Canada, and the Rocky Mountains, the film revolutionized special effects. Zoran Perisic's "Zoptic" system finally allowed audiences to "believe a man can fly," while Derek Meddings's models brought the spectacular disasters on screen to life.

Released in December 1978, Superman was an instant hit: it grossed over $300 million worldwide, won a Special Oscar for Visual Effects, and received three Academy Award nominations (including Best Original Score for John Williams). Critics hailed it as a joyous blend of adventure, romance, and wonder.
