In the 1970s, Russell Athletic emerged as a true force in American sportswear. Already the leading sportswear manufacturer in the United States, it outfitted NFL teams, college programs, and high school programs across the country. With Eugene C. Gwaltney at the helm, the company reorganized in 1973 as Russell Corporation, expanding production in the South and abroad and opening a state-of-the-art distribution center in Alabama. Russell pioneered fabric blends like cotton-polyester, which were more durable and capable of better moisture management. Its rugged sweatshirts and tracksuits became the go-to gear, both on and off the field. As sportswear began to become an everyday fashion, classic gray sweatshirts and hoodies with the Russell logo became ingrained in youth culture from coast to coast.
The 1970s also marked the debut of the “Eagle R” logo, which became iconic as a symbol of quality and authenticity. Russell wasn’t about show, but it was everywhere: by mid-decade, 18 of the 28 NFL teams wore Russell, as did most Southern colleges. Their motto was clear: “Any resemblance to the uniforms we produce for the pros is purely intentional.” Production expanded globally, but much of the apparel was still “Made in USA.”
With 10,000 employees in 1979, the company remained a major American employer. And more than just outfitting athletes, Russell helped legitimize sportswear as casual wear, predating the athleisure phenomenon by decades. By the end of the decade, Russell wasn't just providing uniforms: it was helping define the way America dressed.

Since they are vintage items, they may still have small imperfections or signs of wear that are not always shown.

Orders are processed within 1-3 business days and entrusted to the most suitable courier based on the destination and type of package.
Shipping is free for orders over €100 in Italy and EU countries (zones 1-2) , while in other cases the costs are calculated automatically at checkout.
