Story Time

🍫✨ Hershey in the '70s: From classic chocolate bar to modern icon 🚀📈

In the 1970s, Hershey shed its traditional image and entered a bold new era. Under the leadership of Harold Mohler and Bill Dearden, the company implemented strategic planning, revamped its leadership, and moved its headquarters to Milton Hershey's former home—a new beginning with strong symbolic meaning. 🏛️🔄

Hershey went beyond chocolate: it acquired Twizzlers (Y&S Candies), the Friendly's restaurant chain 🍦, and Skinner Macaroni 🍝, also securing the U.S. rights to Kit Kat (1970) and York Peppermint Patties (1975). In 1973, it launched Chocolate World, an immersive visitor center that attracted 1.4 million guests in its first year alone. 🎟️🏭

The company also shot for the stars, literally. In 1971, the Hershey Tropical Bar flew aboard the Apollo 15 mission. 🌌🚀 Back on Earth, Hershey led the industry by introducing nutrition facts labels in 1973 and adopting barcodes in 1976. 📦🔍

New products like Reese's Pieces and the Skor bar helped offset the slowdown in candy sales. Despite inflation and rising costs, Hershey remained strong—reaching $1 billion in revenue by 1979. 💰📊

Labor peace, community focus, and nostalgic charm helped Hershey remain America's sweet spot during a turbulent decade. The result? A more modern, diverse, and resilient Hershey, still deeply rooted in tradition, but ready for the future. 🇺🇸❤️
