Story Time

Curious George: From Europe at War to a World of Wonder

Before he arrived in children's bedrooms, Curious George fled a war.
Its creators, HA and Margret Rey, German-Jewish artists, fled Paris in 1940 on hand-built bicycles, with manuscripts tied to the handlebars.
In New York, in 1941, they published the book introducing the world to a curious little monkey and the Man with the Yellow Hat, beginning seven classic adventures (1941–1966) that combined Hans's warm illustrations with Margret's lively storytelling.
George's curiosity, which often got him into trouble but always led him to discovery, made him a beloved character throughout the world.

The legacy grew with award-winning books, films, and a long-running series on PBS Kids that wove simple STEM concepts into his antics.
Today, museums tell the story of the Reys' journey as refugees, and new generations continue to encounter that sunny monkey who turns mistakes into discoveries.
From a daring bike ride to bedtime stories, few characters have brought with them so much history and heart.
