STORY TIME
General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. (1934–2012) was one of America’s most famous modern generals. Nicknamed “Stormin’ Norman” for his forceful style, he rose to fame leading the U.S.-led coalition in the 1991 Gulf War. His bold “Left Hook” strategy crushed Saddam Hussein’s forces in just 100 hours, liberating Kuwait and restoring America’s pride.
His story, though, began long before Desert Storm. The son of a military officer, he grew up traveling the world, graduated from West Point and earned a master’s degree in engineering before serving two tours in Vietnam, during which he risked his life to save men trapped in a minefield. Rising through the ranks, he commanded troops in Grenada and became head of U.S. Central Command, a role that prepared him for the Gulf War.
Beloved as a true “soldier’s general,” he demanded toughness but cared deeply for his troops. After retiring, he wrote a best-selling autobiography, supported charities, campaigned for cancer prevention and promoted wildlife conservation. Honored both in the United States and abroad, he is remembered as a symbol of strong leadership, clear strategy and service to the nation.
