Story Time

Liverpool 1983–84: The Treble in the lion's den 🏆

In 1983–84, Liverpool entered a new era with Joe Fagan at the helm, yet they once again finished as European kings. In his very first year as manager, the quiet man from the Boot Room led the team to the treble: league, League Cup, and European Cup. Ian Rush scored 47 goals in all competitions, as Liverpool secured their third consecutive First Division title and lifted the League Cup for the fourth year in a row, defeating Everton in a tense all-Merseyside final that was decided in a replay.

The high point came in Rome. Against Roma in their home stadium, Liverpool transformed the Olimpico into their stage. Phil Neal struck first, the Giallorossi equalized, and after 120 minutes the score was still 1-1: everything was decided on penalties, in front of a wall of Roma fans. Bruce Grobbelaar's legendary "spaghetti legs" sent the opposing penalty takers into a panic, and Graeme Souness lifted Liverpool's fourth European Cup, once again on Italian soil.
