Story Time

LL Bean: From Laboratory Experiment to American Outdoor Icon

The story of L.L. Bean begins in 1912 with a legendary failure. After handcrafting his first “Maine Hunting Shoes,” ninety out of a hundred pairs fell apart. Instead of giving up, Bean refunded every customer, rebuilt the boots, and laid the foundation for a brand built on trust. Over the course of the 20th century, the company’s mail-order catalog became a cultural institution, filled with rugged flannels, field jackets, canvas bags, and, of course, the iconic Bean Boots. The Freeport store remained open 24 hours a day for decades, a symbol of a company that held service almost as a credo. Families across America became familiar with the brand thanks to the catalogs’ conversational style, lifetime guarantees, and a growing selection of products tested in the woods and waters of Maine.

In the 1970s and 1980s, L.L. Bean became both a leading outdoor brand and an unexpected style icon, present in prep school closets as well as hunting lodges. Under Leon Gorman's leadership, the company modernized without losing its identity: it computerized its catalog system, expanded its women's and children's lines, opened stores from New England to Tokyo, and, in the 1990s, pioneered e-commerce. Even as fashions and retail changed, the brand maintained its essence.
