Story Time

Crazy Inter 1993–94: From Hell to the Night of Redemption

In Serie A, Inter endured a nightmare. A team rebuilt around Dennis Bergkamp, Rubén Sosa, Wim Jonk, and veterans Bergomi, Berti, and Zenga slumped to 13th place, just one point above relegation. The atmosphere at San Siro swung from initial optimism to boos and protest banners, while the Italian press slammed Bergkamp to the point of renaming the "Dumpster of the Week" award after him. While across town, Milan won the Scudetto, Inter struggled through draws with Piacenza and defeats against Atalanta, looking more like a team fighting for survival than a noble European team.

But in the UEFA Cup, everything changed. With Giampiero Marini on the bench, Inter transformed into a true cup team: Bergkamp's hat-trick against Rapid Bucharest, Jonk's thunderous strikes in Dortmund, the 3–0 comeback against Cagliari under the lights of San Siro, and finally the tense two-legged final against Salzburg.

In Vienna, Berti scored immediately; in Milan, in front of 80,000 fans and wearing that legendary Umbro-Fiorucci shirt, Jonk's deflected shot made it 2–0 on aggregate, while Bergomi and Zenga threw themselves on every ball.

A team that had flirted with relegation ended the season by lifting a European trophy, further proof of why Inter are called Crazy: suffering for months, then finding glory when it really matters.
