Vintage ’60s Champion collegiate jacket, made in the USA and officially branded for East Tennessee State University.
The jacket features a full-zip front closure with a contrasting vertical placket, fastened by a brass TALON zipper. It’s made from a tightly woven cotton typical of athletic outerwear from the era, and the chest shows a screen print reading East Tenn. State University.
The condition shows signs of use and wear consistent with its age, confirming its authenticity and historical character.

In the ’60s, East Tennessee State University went through one of the most important transformations in its history. What had long been a regional teachers’ college officially became a university in 1963. New degree programs in psychology, social work and the sciences broadened academic life, while enrollment grew from about 5,000 students at the start of the decade to nearly 7,000 by the mid-’60s.
The campus changed too, reshaping the Johnson City hillside: new dorms, a modern student union, a library expansion and new academic buildings went up almost year after year.
Student culture evolved alongside it. At the start of the decade, ETSU still held “Rat Week,” a traditional freshman initiation ritual that included hazing and rigid hierarchies. In 1967, students and administration replaced it with School Spirit Week, shifting the focus to rallies, shared events and welcoming new freshmen rather than intimidation. At the same time, the university began to embrace its Appalachian identity: in 1966 the Appalachian Folk Festival was born, bringing traditional mountain music, dance and local crafts to campus.
