Story Time

From Hush to Bananas: The Rebirth of Deep Purple 🎸🍌

By 2003, Deep Purple had lived more lives than most bands could even imagine: from psychedelic beginnings to hard rock dominance, through lineup changes and legendary comebacks. But Bananas represented something different: the sound of a rebirth.

It was the first album without founding keyboardist Jon Lord, whose Hammond had defined Purple's tone since 1968. In his place came Don Airey, a veteran of Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne's band, bringing new energy and sophistication. Recorded in Los Angeles with producer Michael Bradford, Bananas abandoned the studio perfectionism of the past for a more direct approach, recorded live in just a few weeks.

The result wasn't nostalgia, but pure vitality: an album that blended irony, sentiment, and power. From the soul ballad "Haunted" (featuring Beth Hart) to the touching instrumental "Contact Lost," Bananas proved that, even after a 35-year career, Deep Purple still had a lot to say.
