Story Time

Penn State's Legacy: Colors, Mascots, and Timeless Traditions

Founded in 1855, Penn State boasts a rich heritage. The official colors of blue and white, adopted in 1890, symbolize the university's pride and are worn by generations of students and fans to demonstrate their roots and loyalty, both in Pennsylvania and beyond.

Before these colors became iconic, however, the original school colors were pink and black, chosen in 1887. Although they were in use for a short time, they are still part of the university's historical memory and often appear on commemorative jerseys and student apparel, reminding fans of Penn State's early days.

One of the university's most enduring symbols is the Nittany Lion mascot, named after Mount Nittany, a local landmark. Inspired by the mountain lions that once roamed the region, the Nittany Lion has been inspiring crowds at sporting events for over a century. Before this mascot took center stage, however, Penn State students developed a love for another animal: a mule named Old Coaly.
