Story Time

The NBA's Last True Villains

The Detroit Pistons' story began in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where the franchise was founded in 1937 as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, a company team owned by industrialist Fred Zollner. The team quickly became one of the strongest organizations in early professional basketball, winning two consecutive NBL titles in 1944 and 1945 before joining the BAA and later the NBA after the 1949 merger. The franchise even helped shape modern basketball: a notorious 19-18 game against the Minneapolis Lakers in 1950 became one of the main reasons the NBA adopted the 24-second shot clock. When the team moved to Detroit in 1957, it entered a larger market but spent decades failing to turn talent into sustained success.

Everything changed in the 1980s. The turning point came with the selection of Isiah Thomas in the 1981 Draft, followed by Joe Dumars in 1985, and Dennis Rodman and John Salley in 1986. Around them, Detroit built a roster based as much on chemistry and defensive versatility as on pure talent. This mix gave birth to the identity of the “Bad Boys”: a team that made physicality, psychological pressure, and aggressive defense its hallmark, while remaining tactically sophisticated. Detroit pushed Larry Bird’s Celtics to their limits in 1987, suffered a painful loss to Magic Johnson’s Lakers in the 1988 Finals, and finally prevailed by winning two consecutive titles in 1989 and 1990.
