Story Time

Before Disney was Disney, there was Minnie

Minnie Mouse was not added later; she was present from the very beginning. In 1928, after losing the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney needed a new character he could fully control. In that moment of crisis, Mickey Mouse was born, with Minnie integrated directly into the same concept as his counterpart. The initial development involved Walt Disney, with a key role in design entrusted to Ub Iwerks, whose rapid and simplified drawing style helped define the iconic look of both characters. Minnie’s first appearance was in Plane Crazy (May 1928), but her true public debut, which defines her “official birth date,” was in Steamboat Willie on November 18, 1928, the first Disney cartoon with synchronized sound to achieve great success.

From the beginning, Minnie was not just a romantic interest, but represented the "modern girl" of the late 1920s: active, expressive, and part of Mickey's dynamic world. In early cartoons, we see her flying planes, performing musical numbers, and participating in slapstick scenes, rather than being relegated to a passive role. This dynamic was reinforced in Mickey's Follies (1929), where "Minnie's Yoo Hoo" became both a musical identity and a symbol of their relationship. Over time, her personality evolved to become more multifaceted, often balancing traditional femininity with moments of independence, charm, and a subtle ability to control social situations.
