Story Time

Roach Studios & the Iron-On Fashion Explosion

In 1962, two brothers from Ohio began airbrushing hot rod artwork onto T-shirts, inspired by California legends like Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. Their small business, Roach Studios, exploded in success when, in the late 1960s, they adopted a new technology: iron-on transfers. For the first time, anyone could purchase a bold design by mail order, print it with a simple iron, and transform a plain T-shirt into wearable art.

In the 1970s, Roach became a household name in T-shirt graphics. Their catalogs featured psychedelic posters adapted for fabric, Marvel superheroes, irreverent cartoons, ironic slogans like “I Just Got Laid,” and underground art by legends like Robert Crumb, Ed Newton, and Stanley Mouse. From concerts to state fairs, kids lined up to create their own T-shirts, fueling a DIY movement that spawned thousands of independent shops across the country. By 1978, Roach was a $20 million company and a pop culture staple.

The 1980s brought new challenges: with stricter licensing and shopping malls flooded with mass-produced T-shirts, the iron-on boom began to wane. In 1987, Roach Studios closed its doors, but its designs lived on. Collectors still jealously guard the original sheets, and in 2010 the brand was relaunched, bringing the classics back to a new generation.
