Story Time

Campus in Transition: How the 1960s Shaped the University of Akron

The University of Akron traces its roots back to 1870, when it was founded as Buchtel College. In 1967, after decades as a municipal university, Akron officially joined the Ohio State University system.

The 1960s were a period of rapid growth under President Norman P. Auburn. Auburn carried out an ambitious building program: the University Library opened in 1961, followed by the Science and Technology Library in 1968, and Memorial Hall, dedicated to Akron-area World War II veterans. Academically, the founding of the School of Law (1959), the School of Nursing (1967), and the launch of the first doctoral programs laid the groundwork for the university's future research mission.

The late 1960s also saw a growing wave of student activism related to racial justice. In December 1969, six Black students, frustrated by the delays in establishing an African-American studies program, occupied Buchtel Hall with a list of demands. Although the protest lasted only a few hours, it prompted the university to quickly establish an African-American Studies program and, later, to open a Black Cultural Center.

Alongside activism, campus traditions also flourished. For example, one of the most beloved, "painting the Rock," began in the 1960s as a way for students to express their university spirit (the painted rock still stands next to Crouse Hall today).
