Story Time

Where the American Middle Class Went to Shop

JCPenney's story begins in a Wyoming mining town in 1902, when James Cash Penney opened a small "Golden Rule Store" based on a simple principle: treat customers as you would want to be treated. He turned his clerks into partners through profit-sharing, focused on quality at fair prices, and from that frontier store, built a network that exceeded 1,000 locations by the late 1920s. During the Great Depression and the postwar boom, JCPenney became the place where middle-class America bought everything, so ingrained in daily life that by 1950, one in four Americans shopped there. The brand also attempted brief expansions abroad, from Belgium and Italy to Chile, Mexico, and Indonesia.

In the 1980s, JCPenney flirted with designer fashion (their collaboration with Halston is famous), brought Sephora to the heart of US malls, and trained future retail giants like Sam Walton before they built their empires. The 1970s marked a turning point: the peak of stores, the transformation of the first Wyoming store into a national landmark, and the entry into a new era of payments and marketing, as the old world of five-and-dime finally gave way to modern retail.
