Story Time

How the Hoosiers Took Shape

Indiana University was founded in 1820 as a state seminary in Bloomington, at a time when Indiana was still a frontier state. During the 19th century, it evolved into a full-fledged university and gradually became one of the leading public institutions in the Midwest. IU quickly distinguished itself by expanding access to higher education: women were admitted on equal terms as early as the 1860s, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the university produced some of the state's first African-American graduates.

Sports became a central part of IU's identity. The university's teams adopted the name "Hoosiers" in the early 20th century, a traditional nickname for Indiana residents, likely originating from frontier slang. Competing in the Big Ten Conference, IU built nationally renowned sports programs in several disciplines. Men's basketball became the most iconic, with five NCAA titles between 1940 and 1987, including a historic undefeated title in 1976 under coach Bob Knight. At the same time, IU developed outstanding programs beyond basketball: men's soccer rose from club status in the early 1970s to a national powerhouse, swimming and diving under Doc Counsilman produced Olympic champions like Mark Spitz, and track and field athletes represented the university on international Olympic stages.
