Story Time

The Saga of Fiorentina in the Seventies

The 1970s were pure drama for Fiorentina. The decade began with a new owner (Ugolini) and a visionary coach, Nils Liedholm, the man who discovered a shy youngster named Giancarlo Antognoni and transformed him into the team's beating heart. In the mid-1970s, the Viola reached its pinnacle: the 1975 Coppa Italia, won against AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico. A few months later, another surprise arrived: Fiorentina overcame West Ham, then champions of England in the FA Cup, to win the Anglo-Italian League Cup. But those triumphs were also accompanied by pain: Vincenzo Guerini, a rising star, saw his career cut short after a terrible car accident.

The arrival of Carlo Mazzone brought a breath of fresh air. In 1976–77, his disciplined and tireless team achieved a surprising third-place finish, their best finish of the decade, and Fiorentina returned to Europe. But with constant changes in coaches, the late 1970s brought instability, missed opportunities, and a slow slide toward mid-table. Behind the scenes, corporate turmoil and the sudden death of president Rodolfo Melloni fueled a general sense of transition.
