Story Time

Operation Desert Storm: When TV Met High-Tech Warfare

From January to February 1991, Operation Desert Storm was the most fought phase of the Gulf War, launched after Iraq invaded and annexed Kuwait in August 1990. When the UN-imposed deadline for Iraq's withdrawal expired without success, a US-led coalition launched one of the largest air campaigns since Vietnam on January 17. Precision strikes, cruise missiles, and continuous day-and-night bombing weakened the Iraqi command and infrastructure, before a brief but decisive ground offensive began on February 24, pushing Iraqi forces out of Kuwait in approximately 100 hours, until a ceasefire was declared.

The war also unfolded in an unprecedented media environment. For the first time, 24-hour news networks broadcast live from the rooftops of Baghdad hotels and coalition headquarters in Saudi Arabia, shaping public perception in real time. Nighttime images of airstrikes, briefings from military commanders, and tightly controlled press access created a new model of televised conflict, emphasizing technology, precision, and speed, while revealing very little of the war's human cost.
