Story Time

The world's smallest shared island

For such a small island, St. Maarten boasts one of the most unique histories in the Caribbean. With an area of just 87 square kilometers, it has been peacefully divided between the Netherlands and France since the Treaty of Concordia in 1648, making it the smallest inhabited island in the world shared by two nations. Originally populated by the Arawak, it later attracted Europeans primarily for its valuable salt pans rather than large sugar plantations, developing an economy based on maritime trade and an exceptional intertwining of cultures that still defines its identity today.

The island also played an unusual role in Caribbean history. When France abolished slavery in 1848, many slaves crossed the open border from the Dutch side to the French side, helping to accelerate the emancipation process across the entire island, long before the Netherlands officially abolished slavery in 1863. For much of the 20th century, St. Maarten remained a quiet island based on fishing, salt extraction, and trade, before tourism completely transformed its economy.

By the 1980s, St. Maarten had already become one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the Caribbean. Princess Juliana International Airport gained worldwide fame thanks to the spectacular landings over Maho Beach and even welcomed regular charter flights from Air France's Concorde, bringing the world's fastest airliner to one of the region's smallest islands.
