Story Time

Sharks, earthquakes, and classics: Universal Studios in the 1970s

The 1970s marked a bold reinvention for Universal. The decade opened with Airport (1970), the epic disaster movie with an all-star cast that became a surprise hit and kicked off a string of spectacular disaster films. A few years later came The Sting (1973), a Depression-era sensation starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford that won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, restoring prestige to the studio. That same year, George Lucas's American Graffiti captured teenage nostalgia on a shoestring budget, grossing over $200 million and launching the careers of Harrison Ford and Ron Howard.

Universal pushed the envelope even further with Earthquake (1974), famous for introducing Sensurround, massive subwoofers that shook theaters along with the on-screen tremors. Then came Jaws (1975): Steven Spielberg's shark thriller that redefined Hollywood film distribution. With a massive television campaign and a wide national release, it became the first true summer blockbuster, grossing $260 million and changing the industry forever.

The 1970s also transformed Universal into a tourist destination. The Studio Tour added spectacular attractions like the Flash Flood, the Red Sea Crossing, and, in 1976, "Jaws Lake," where trams passed a mechanical shark. Over 4 million visitors a year came to experience the magic of Hollywood up close, making the studio lot a magnet in itself.
