Story Time

From beaver pelts to leather jackets: The legacy of the Fort Bridger Rendezvous

Born in 1825 along the Green River in Wyoming, the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous revolutionized the fur trade. Instead of trappers transporting the pelts to St. Louis, traders brought the goods to the heart of the frontier. For a few weeks during the summer, the trappers' "white lodges" stood alongside rows of native tipis: pelts were exchanged for gunpowder, beads, knives, and fabrics, and the trade soon transformed into a celebration, with shooting contests, horse races, dancing, and storytelling around the campfire.

The last major rendezvous ended in 1840, but the routes and knowledge created by those pioneers, including Jim Bridger, paved the way for emigrant trails and, soon after, the birth of Fort Bridger itself.

A century later, that spirit revived. Every year on Labor Day, the Fort Bridger Mountain Man Rendezvous recreates an encampment from the 1830s: strictly pre-1840s attire, tipi villages, Traders' Row, black powder shooting, axe and knife throwing, archery, and Native American dances. In 1988, an internal dispute threatened to move the event to Utah, but locals opposed it, and the rendezvous remained where it was born. That year, with full fields, thundering rifles, candy cannons for the children, and a total immersion in living history, demonstrated the strength and resilience of a tradition that endures to this day.
