Story Time

The Man Called Flintstone

Created by Hanna-Barbera and inspired by The Honeymooners, The Flintstones landed on ABC on September 30, 1960, changing television forever: the first prime-time animated sitcom, complete with recorded laugh tracks, adult storylines, and even Fred and Wilma sharing a bed.
Set in pun-filled Bedrock, the series, with its clean, comedic style, great theme songs by Hoyt Curtin, and sitcom-like story arcs (Wilma's pregnancy, Pebbles' birth), instantly became a Top 20 Nielsen hit and a cultural staple.
Six seasons, 166 episodes, an Emmy nomination, and a huge merchandising trail (vitamins, cereals, toys) sealed the triumph: the Stone Age family had truly “yabba-dabba-made” history, making cartoons cool even for adults.

And the stone never stopped rolling. Spin-offs and specials in the '70s and '80s (Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm, The Flintstone Comedy Hour, Christmas episodes) kept Bedrock alive, while the '90s brought TV movies on ABC (I Yabba-Dabba Do!, Hollyrock-a-Bye Baby), the preschool series Cave Kids, and the 1994 live-action film, which turned the quarry dust into box office gold.
Syndication, global reruns, and ubiquitous merchandising have sealed the myth: Bedrock isn't just a setting, it's a piece of television archaeology, still alive and vibrant.
