Story Time

Old Washington, Old Glory: The Surprise of 1942

Washington's NFL team was founded as the Boston Braves in 1932, changing its name to the Redskins in 1933 and moving to Washington, D.C., in 1937. In its early years, the franchise quickly became a powerhouse, built by eccentric owner George Preston Marshall. Washington won its first championship in 1937, then spent the early 1940s engaged in a fierce rivalry with the Chicago Bears. That rivalry turned brutal in 1940, when the Bears humiliated Washington 73–0 in the NFL Championship Game, still the most lopsided game in league history.

Two seasons later, in 1942, Washington got its revenge in the most dramatic way possible. In the midst of World War II, with players and coaches coming and going for military service, the undefeated Bears arrived in the capital as overwhelming favorites, chasing a third consecutive title. Instead, in front of a capacity crowd and a wartime atmosphere, Washington's defense stifled Chicago and earned a 14–6 victory, ending the Bears' long winning streak.

Long before the Super Bowls of the 1980s and 1990s, that game helped define Washington's identity and is still remembered as one of the biggest upsets in early professional football history.
