STORY TIME
Imagine a gas station… but in flight. That's what made the KC-135 Stratotanker possible, enabling US jets to fly farther and stay on missions longer from its first flight in 1956. In the 1980s, the older KC-135As were upgraded to the KC-135E, with more efficient jet engines (and rare thrust reversers), offering a significant performance boost, especially to National Guard and Reserve units. These E-models served as a bridge to the modern KC-135R fleet, remaining in service worldwide until 2009.
Milwaukee's 128th Air Refueling Group/Wing was a key part of this story. Born as a fighter unit during World War II, the 128th transitioned to tankers in 1961, becoming the first Air National Guard unit to achieve operational combat status. For a decade, they flew KC-97s in Europe during “Creek Party” rotations, then entered the jet age with KC-135As in 1976, upgraded to Es in 1982. They participated in Desert Shield/Desert Storm from Cairo West in 1990–91 and, in 1991, were the first Guard/Reserve to receive the KC-135R. From there, they supported missions around the world, from relief efforts in Somalia to the war in Kosovo and beyond.
