Vintage 1996 San Diego Bayfair Powerboat Racing T-shirt with Fruit of the Loom print from the mid-1990s, single stitch, and some wear. Made in USA.

STORY TIME
The 1996 San Diego Bayfair Bill Muncey Cup, held on September 15th at Mission Bay, offered a mix of high-speed racing, controversy, and spectacular crashes in the H1 Unlimited powerboat racing series. In Heat 1A, Mark Tate, driving Smokin' Joe's, took an early lead, but Dave Villwock, driving a PICO American Dream, attempted an aggressive maneuver at the entry mark and passed him. Exiting the turn, Villwock crossed into lane two, and the officials handed him a one-lap penalty.

During the warm-up for Heat 3B, Mike Hanson, piloting the DeWALT Tools U-6, lost control: the boat skidded and collided with the Harvey Motorsports U-2. The impact flipped the seaplane, which landed upside down. Hanson suffered a minor concussion and a bruise, but fortunately escaped with almost no injuries.

Despite initial difficulties, Mark Evans, driving the Miss Budweiser, took victory in the final, demonstrating great skill in navigating the course and overcoming the day's adversities. The 1996 Bayfair Bill Muncey Cup perfectly represents the unpredictable and thrilling nature of hydroplane racing, highlighting both the risks and the extraordinary dedication of the participants.

San Diego Bayfair, founded in 1964, is a premier annual festival held at Mission Bay Park, celebrating the adrenaline-fueled world of powerboat racing. The event was conceived by legendary hydroplane pilot Bill Muncey, who dreamed of bringing high-speed racing to San Diego's waters.

Over the decades, Bayfair has grown into Southern California's largest beach festival and powerboat competition. The inaugural race in 1964 marked the beginning of a tradition that has drawn over 5 million spectators to Mission Bay. Initially focused on hydroplane racing, the event has expanded to include drag boats, international competitors, live music, and aerial displays, offering diverse and engaging entertainment for the public.

A significant chapter in the Bayfair's history is its association with the prestigious APBA Gold Cup. This renowned trophy, established in 1903, has been contested in the waters of Mission Bay several times, including in 1969, 1970, 1987, and 1989. Of particular note, the 2024 Bayfair marked the Gold Cup's return to San Diego after a 35-year absence, confirming the event's immense importance within the powerboat racing community.

The Bayfair races are held on the Bill Muncey Memorial Race Course, a 2.5-mile circuit named after the event's founder. Memorable feats have been recorded here, including the world lap record set by Dave Villwock in 1999, a record that still stands today.
