Story Time

Dennis the Menace: From the 1951 Comic to 1990s Cartoons, Films, and Merchandise

Dennis the Menace debuted in 1951 when cartoonist Hank Ketcham, inspired by his own mischievous son, created the freckled five-year-old who always had good intentions but ended up causing disaster, especially for poor Mr. Wilson. The strip became an instant international success, published in over 1,000 newspapers worldwide, and earned Ketcham the prestigious Reuben Award in 1953.

The character's popularity soon spread to television and film, from the live-action series that aired on CBS in 1959 to the animated specials of the 1980s. In 1993, Warner Bros. brought him to the big screen with a film starring Mason Gamble and Walter Matthau, which grossed $117 million worldwide. Sequels followed, including a direct-to-video release in 1998 starring Don Rickles and Betty White, and a Christmas movie in 2007. Over time, Dennis has also been featured in video games, becoming a fixture of American pop culture.

Interestingly, on the same day Ketcham's Dennis debuted in the United States, another Dennis the Menace appeared in the British comic book Beano. The English Dennis, a disheveled rebel with his dog Gnasher, was a willful troublemaker, unlike the American, whose mischief arose from innocence and good intentions. Though unrelated, the coincidence made "Dennis the Menace" a name shared by two of the world's most enduring comic book icons.
