STORY TIME
The 1977 NHRA U.S. Nationals was one of drag racing's most legendary events. Held at Indianapolis Raceway Park, it attracted over 119,000 spectators and provided surprises in every class.

In Top Fuel, outsider Dennis Baca surprised everyone by defeating defending champion Richard Tharp. Don “The Snake” Prudhomme won his sixth Nationals title in Funny Car, while Don Nicholson, at 50, defeated Bob Glidden in a Pro Stock final that thrilled the crowd. It was a weekend of milestones: Shirley Muldowney became the first woman to win an NHRA world championship, and Don Garlits became the first drag racer to be inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame.

Crashes added to the drama, with Dale Emery's crash ending his racing career, while Larry Lombardo's fiery Pro Stock crash left fans breathless.

That race closed the era of 32-car Pro fields and became one of the most celebrated Nationals ever, remembered for its heart, its history, and its power. 🏁🔥

🏁 Joe Amato: Top Fuel Legend 🚀

Joe Amato is one of the greatest drivers in NHRA drag racing history. From 1982 to 2000, he never finished outside the top 10 in the standings, an unmatched consistency across 19 seasons! 💪🏆

  • 5-time Top Fuel champion (1984, 1988, 1990–92)
  • 52 career wins (record at the time)
  • First to exceed 260 mph (1984) and 280 mph (1987)
  • 99 finals played

Amato was known not only for speed, but also for style; his cars often sported Snoopy, and his fanbase proudly called itself “Joe's Army.” 💥

Off the track, he transformed Keystone Automotive into an aftermarket giant and served on the SEMA board. His charisma, media presence, and fair play made him a crowd favorite and the face of drag racing in the 1980s and 1990s. 🎤

1990 was his best season. The title fight with rival Gary Ormsby was decided in the FINAL RACE at Pomona. Both had won six races that year (tying the NHRA record). In the deciding race, Ormsby started in red light, and Amato sprinted to victory with a time of 4.93 seconds, thus securing his third title, joining legends like Don Garlits. 🏁

That moment began a streak of three consecutive titles, establishing Amato as a true drag racing icon. 💨🎖️

Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (2004) and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (2005).
